Breather
http://maximus.twoday.net/stories/5729411/
I finally find myself with a little time on my hand. The YTSO has finished (for now), Thailand was amazing (pictures here and here) and everything's a bit quiet at work due to a re-org. So while I am waiting for the next big project to come, I am dedicating time to surf the web and shake my Google goggles off a bit again. Also, I have sat hours and hours reviewing my photos of the last three years and preparing some nice collections. It's not quite finished, but I hope I stay on it and will be able to post something soon.

Generally, it's an exciting time as I feel that Rocio and I are about to settle in London for the first time. Lots of plans on the way!

still here
http://maximus.twoday.net/stories/5614948/
I admit I've been playing with the thought of abandoning my twoday blog and move to Tumblr or Wordpress. The reason is simple: in a lot of aspects twoday.net seems outdated and while I understand why this is, I just can't stay around for nostalgy.

Yet, this is what I'll do for now. In a period where I can't find the time to write posts, how will I find the time to create a blog from scratch? Also, the other services didn't convince me entirely either (although some stuff is seriously impressive, like Wordpress being Google Gears compatible), so I guess I will wait (tumblr is a hot bet).

In the meanwhile, I updated my blogroll and added a section linking to my profiles at Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, etc.

P.S.:
I am writing this from NYC, where I am in the midst of the preparations for the YouTube Symphony event at Carnegie Hall. This is definitely the coolest project I ever worked on, the press impact was huge and I will post more about it soon.

Saw the Queen, no photos
http://maximus.twoday.net/stories/5259531/
The Queen came to our UK office today and I had a prime position where I could watch her stroll by. I took some photos with my phone, but somehow they're broken. Well, maybe the next time ;-)

Summer is gone, a new chapter begins
http://maximus.twoday.net/stories/5215745/
While I am already blogging (GDD inspires me), I might as well write a short post about what's happening in my life.

There are obvious signs that the summer is nearing it's end, even in Madrid. However, it was not so much the weather that made this fact clear to me, but the departure of the girl, that does not admit to know anything (although I would argue against it). I have spent a fabulous summer with her, my family and lots of friends and the photos in picasaweb (for links see blog post from earlier this month) are the best proof for it.

So while autumn is knocking at the door, I am starting a new chapter of my life and I am curious and happy about it. Next week I will be moving to London to take on a new job at in the EMEA Marketing team, leading marketing of Consumer Apps (think Gmail, Picasa, Blogger, Google Sites, etc.) and branding initiatives. Currently, I am already involved in a project which is extremely exciting and I am dying to talk about it (not yet though). Also, the girl that does not admit to know anything will move there too in the beginning of 2009 and I don't have to explain to anyone who knows us that this is a step that we both long have been waiting for.

See you in London!

Tuition fees in Austria
http://maximus.twoday.net/stories/5215451/
"You can't beat free" is a well known slogan, but does it apply for everything? This is a question that Ihave to ask myself learning about the new resolution about the abolishment of tuition fees at Austrian universities. Before telling you why I am against it, I want to make two things clear:

1) I have paid tuition fees myself and while I had the luck that my family paid most of my education during university, it still hurt to pay them because my parents did not pay me more just because university suddenly cost something (when I started in 1999 there were none).

2) I don't agree with tuition fees, but that does not mean that I agree with the political parties that are against it as well (I am actually shocked about the quality of the political landscape at home).

So why is it that I think it was a poor choice to make studying available to everyone? Because I think it is an idealistic and most of all, a populistic move before the elections. There is no black and white, it's more complicated.

While it surely hurts the students to pay tuition fees in the moment they're paying it, they'd benefit a lot more from higher quality of education in the long term. As for the argument of accessibility: Yes, there have to be loans and scholarships. I doubt that a lot of people were not able to study because of the 380 something Euros they had to pay. For the not so well-off, there were scholarships available and no, I don't know if there were people that fell through the system (poor, but not eligible for scholarship in other words), I am all for improving and changing the system, but not just making a valuable good entirely free without any entry barriers. It takes away funds from the universities and decreases the overall quality of students and the student experience.

I think everyone agrees that Austria is far from having the best overall university system in the world. It's not all bad, but what does this step do to improve our status quo? Nothing.

Finally, I just want to point out that studying is a lot more expensive in other countries. In my point of view, I don't think of education as a free service, but one that should be supported by the state and made available by lots and lots of scholarships for students that come from lower incomes. This is the equivalent to a progressive tax model and thus a pretty socialistic idea, so why the hell is the Socialist Party not for it?

Just as a last comment I would like to state, in accordance to my black and white comment from before, that my thoughts about this topic refer to Austria, not to other countries. There is not one model that fits all. You see, it's complicated ;-)

Summer photos
http://maximus.twoday.net/stories/5175390/
Summer is practically over and I am planning to revive my weblog again. For those who don't know yet, I have accepted a new job in the European Marketing team in London and will move there in October. There, I'll be in charge for Consumer Apps and "Special Initiatives". I was already assigned to the first one and it's very exciting. Unfortunately, you will have to wait until the 1st of December until it's live.

I'll hopefully post something soon again, for now some slideshows of pictures from this summer:
Beautiful
http://maximus.twoday.net/stories/4843040/
Oh, I had a wonderful weekend. On Friday I stayed home, the Saturday I spent at Retiro park and went out with friends (what turned into a bit of a weird experience, but still) and Sunday I met up with an old friends, met new people at his place and drank Bloody Maries on his terrace. Not so bad, hm?

Here are some snapshots, tomorrow I will also post a video:

First weekend. April 08

Madrid in spring is breathtaking and yet, I don't know if I am going to stay a lot longer here. It's time to move "out of the comfort zone" as some friend has put it recently. Most crucially though, I miss my girlfriend. I'd move to the Antarctic to be finally with her. However, I hope it's gonna be a nicer place where we finally settle down ;-)

Good night!

Live to work or Work to live?
http://maximus.twoday.net/stories/4775579/
Today I read a pretty interesting article from Jason Calacanis on his opinion about work/life balance when working in startup companies:

" (...) In fact, I was writing about technology while I was an IT consultant in the early 90s. Now, I did feel like my IT job was work--in the bad sense. Don't get me wrong, I loved the IT business but many times it felt like drudgery. So, I can feel Duncan on that front: when you don't love what you do it sucks. The solution to that is fairly obvious, go find something you love to do in life. It might take some time, but it really isn't THAT hard given how amazing the market is (at least in the United Stats). (...)"

Especially recently I thought a lot about this issue and I found two things to be true (in general, not just in startup companies):

1) It's important that you love what you do, but it's REALLY hard to find such a job. If you really want to succeed in your career though, I guess this is what you have to look for, although it might require lots of patience and effort.

2) Even then, you can run into problems. In the best case you don't see your job purely as work, but as a hobby that earns you money. It becomes tricky, however, when the job gets so time consuming that it takes away your private life and sucks in all your attention. Too much of anything is a bad thing too and establishing limits is important.

Conclusion: Even if you get what you want, life does not get easier ;-)

Saturday, January 26th 2008
http://maximus.twoday.net/stories/4651026/
It's Saturday and I just spent the afternoon on my balcony enjoying the sun. It's not hot, but it has about 18 degrees which is not bad at all. In Austria, you have to wait until end of March for such a day, if you have bad luck probably even until beginning of May. That's when the advantages of living in Spain become really obvious ;-)

Andrew Meyer
http://maximus.twoday.net/stories/4287954/
After watching some stuff about the Andrew Meyer incident on YouTube, I actually wonder why there is even a discussion about whether it was justified to taser him or not. Even if the student was provocative and "disturbed peace", the police's reaction was absolutely inappropriate and exaggerated. If at all, it would have been enough to grab him, drag him out and deny him reentrace to the hall, but my personal view is that all this was pretty ridiculous and shocking.

The video:

Fox News report, nothing surprising there:

Here is an article, defending the tasering of the student. What I really like about it, is the comment at the bottom:

Amen! What has the country come to, when obnoxious young intellectuals have the audacity to verbally challenge our senators in blatant defiance of forum rules and with no apparent fear of violent retribution? We need to start Tasing misbehaving children, too.

But seriously, the core problem with Miston's opinion, like so many of its ilk, is that it ignores the underlying issue: why was Meyer arrested in the first place? Disturbing the peace? Give me a break. He may have been obnoxious, but that would have warranted nothing more than being thrown out of the forum -- like an unruly patron would be thrown out of a nightclub by a bouncer. It was a violation of debate rules, not a violation of law.

It's good to know that debate about First Amendment issues on our college campuses has sunk to the level of people on one side telling people on the other to "shut up". There's more than a little irony in that.

Sunday afternoon at Retiro Park
http://maximus.twoday.net/stories/4285837/
Everytime I am at Retiro I ask myself why I don't come here more frequently. It's beautiful, not only because of the lush green lawn and the huge trees, but also because it's fascinating to watch the people. Families, couples, artists and sportsmen from a dozen different nationalities gather here to spend their afternoon, to relax from their busy week. So peacefully together, you ask yourself why the world couldn't be more like Retiro ;-)

For me personally, it's a bit of everything today. I went here to cruise with my new bike, work a bit, listen to music, take some photos and...chill. It's NEARLY the perfect Sunday on a sunny day in autumn.
